WHAT DOES BIODEGRADABLE MEAN?
When you think about being environmentally friendly, you think about biodegradables which are environmentally friendly substances which break down quickly into harmless components. What makes something biodegradable is that the decomposition is done by organisms such as bacteria, fungi. By the time this breaks down there should be nothing left except for water and carbon dioxide waving out food for the trees which they require.
These sound good right ? What do the effects of these materials mean for our planet? And do they do more harm than good ? As we have mentioned earlier that biodegradable products must be broken down and returned to nature, the most natural materials such as food waste which decompose easily. As natural man made products must decompose when they are exposed to oxygen and light. The ability to biodegrade in landfills is also a requirement that the product must meet in order to be classified as biodegradable.
